Course Description :-
Intensive care medicine, also referred as ‘critical care medicine’ is a specially concerned with the management of critically ill patients who are at risk, or have developed potentionality life-threathing failure of any of the body organ systems. It is a speciality involving holistic care of all aspects of citically-ill patients. This includes daignosis, monitoring, treatment and organ support for acute illness, patient safety, end of lifecare, ethics and support of families.
There is increased understanding among the general public about the difference in care between an ICU and ward patient. Recently several TV Channels had shown several ICUs in big cities with no MBBS doctors. Now the authorities have made it mandatory to have qualified and ICU trained doctors to work in ICU. This should be ensured at all times.
“There are more than 1000 district hospitals. Only a small proportion (<10%) of all these hospitals will boast properly equipped or staffed intensive care units (ICUs).”
“Most of the developing nations, critical care medicine as a speciality has developed very slowly. Some of the reports suggested that by 2022, they were likely to be a shortage of 35% Critical Care Doctors in India.”
